My belief on education in the U.S. is that while our primary education like elementary, middle, and high school are struggling and isn't preparing individuals well for secondary schooling like colleges and universities; but its continuing to get better with all the help primary education is still the same. Education is the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life.

1. Some of the advantages of the school system in which I work for are: the curriculum frameworks (various content areas and topics focused on throughout the school year, daily emphasis on teaching math (90 minutes/day) and reading (120 minutes/day), various professional development opportunities, access to supplemental resources, frequent visits and feedback from principal (varies by school), and supportive faculty and staff (varies by school).
ReplyDelete2. I feel that the education in the U.S. is so structured that it can be intimidating, at times. There is so much standardized testing in the U.S. and it starts in Kindergarten. The education in the U.S. is so focused on standardized testing, that some teachers, especially those who teach 3rd grade and above, are forced to "teach to the test". Everyone is not a good test taker, so those standardized test do not prove anything. There are a number of students who make the A/B Honor Roll, but experience test anxiety and fail or barely pass these standardized test. I feel that the education in other countries is more liberated. Other countries are more concerned about teaching their students vital information, rather than comparing intelligences, based on test results, amongst other students throughout the country.
3. I think immigrants come to the U.S. to further their education for one of two reasons. Either the education system is not well established in their country or the education in the U.S. will be of great use when they return to their country. Because the U.S. is so "modernized", compared to other countries, I believe some immigrants feel that the education here is very beneficial. Also, some immigrants come to the U.S. for better living situations and learn that an education is very vital for a decent job. Currently, half of my students are English Language Learners and some of them are struggling greatly in order to adapt to the American culture and school system. These immigrants seem to have this mind set that the U.S. is the country to receive the most vital education.
4. Yes, I have gone to Puebla, Mexico and taught for a month. I taught English in a dual language program and the students in Mexico understood that they were at school to learn. In Mexico, I had less than 5 behavior problem students out of 60. It was not necessary to implement any type of behavior plan or incentives to redirect undesired behavior. I currently have 22 students and I have to redirect undesired behavior daily. I have to use behavior tabs and I have 2 students on behavior intervention plans because their undesired behavior is affected the learning of their peers. Less behavioral problems, in Mexico, allowed more teaching and learning to come forth. Also, the content taught in Mexico was not as structured as it is in the U.S.. There was not a set amount of time to teach a certain content area nor was there an emphasis on teaching a certain topic during a certain time of the school year, which allowed me to teach the content more freely.
5. I believe other countries have more beneficial learning prior to going to college because the students start school at a more developed age. Students are educated at home at younger ages and attend school as they grow older. Attending school at an older/developed age allows the students to keep up with what is being taught and to easily grasp the information. Being educated prior to attending school gives the students the mind set that they are to go to school to learn. Because these students have that mind set prior to entering their countries education system, I feel they are more attentive and receptive to their educator, upon entering school. I feel that their parents really emphasize the importance of an education, which keeps them focused and and mentally prepared for what is to come during their college education. I also feel that the teacher to student ratio is a lot smaller in other countries than in the U.S.. My student to teacher ration is 22:1. Research show that students learn best when there is more individualized instruction. Smaller student to teacher ratios will allow more time for individualized instruction.

1. The advantages are that we have great parental involvement and the teachers are passionate about education.
ReplyDelete2. I believe other countries do better with less money when it comes to elementary and secondary education.
3. We have a great post-secondary education system. Our universities have much more autonomy to educate. There is less politics involved. Notice many students come from other countries and out perform our students at the University level.
4. No
5. Japanese is a totally different culture. They don't have the distractions, that our children have. The focus is not as political as much as their culture honors education. They are not going to school to have fun or learn some adjenda that has nothing to do with life skills.
There are somecountries even start their children at 3. By 16 they have graduated high school and succeed in our universities without any problems.
